Artists' Profiles

INTRODUCTION

Nkoma has three artists with seven assistants who mostly help in doing casual work as they also receive training in the same field. These artists are graduates from various institutions of learning but because here in Uganda art is not so much valued they end up not being employed easily.

Nkoma has come up to help such groups of frustrated intellectuals by making sure there goods are exposed to the international market so as to earn a living. As outlined below are the three major artists whose brains are behind the composing of whatever art comes from Nkoma. Masaba has majored in greeting cards, Wambete in batik wall hangings and Wojibi in framed picture wall hangings

MASABA PISON

Masaba Pison is an artist who developed interest in fine art at a very early age. When he joined school at the age of seven in primary school there he started drawing thus improving on his talent.

Pison took on his art at secondary level as one of his principal subjects and performed well in it at advanced level. And joined a national teachers training college majoring in fine art where he got a diploma in fine art but un employed up to today. He does, greeting cards, batiks and sculptures. Since then life has become quite difficult for him, as fine art is not valued here in Uganda, even the products produced are bought at a very low price, which cannot afford to sustain a living.

Pison joined Nkoma Christian Youth Association (N.C.Y.A) after being identified in Nakaloke as an artist and there after given an interview to see if his art can meet the western interests, thanks to Randall Craig Benston who approved his art and helped us to find the market for it.
