Uganda is a country that has faced war for seventeen years now, leaving many people displaced, dying of hunger of
disease. It has become a threat to the entire community and the country at large. People are migrating from day
to day in search of safety. Hygiene is very poor due to the lack of basic necessities.
The Nkoma Christian Youth Association was formed under St Peter's Church Nkoma in the year 2000 after the rebels
of Lord's Resistance Army (L.R.A) and People's Redemption Army intensified their attacks around almost the entire country.
This war has left many people displaced, including 1.5 million people living in internally displaced camps. These are the
camps such as Kiryandongo, Acholi, Kasese and Katakwi.
Nkoma Christian Youth Association provides the basic needs for the displaced people,
orphans, and street children and HIV/ AIDS victims. The Basic needs include: - Food, water, health and shelter/ good accommodation
facilities.
Water is a very big problem because in Uganda any good purified tap water is paid for
in order to get it, the displaced families are not employed, they don’t have money to buy water and end up drinking
dirty water which leads to cause of dysentery, typhoid and cholera.
Health is very poor, diseases such as malaria caused as a result of mosquito bites attack
families and the displaced cannot afford a mosquito net.
Accommodation is really very poor because we have constructed temporary grass roofed
houses which are very weak in case of heavy rain and wind the houses are washed away and in most cases families end up dying
in the houses.
We have also come up to fight child prostitution by sensitizing the dangers of child
prostitution such as early pregnancies, dangers of HIV/ AIDS diseases that will be another way to sensitize the young ones
about HIV/ AIDS.
We go further and sensitize the general public about the dangers of HIV and AIDS. AIDS
being a threat problem in Uganda and Africa as a continent, we have to devise means of fighting it.
And we feel for those who are already infected with the diseases, we need to provide
cheaper anti-viral drugs to extend their lives for them to accomplish their plans.
The organization provides basic education to the community, there the government of Uganda
has given us an upper hand by providing free education to primary level but the problems come in at secondary and tertiary
level.
The government doesn’t provide scholastic materials for the students, to provide
scholastic materials and pay fees for a few of those who succeed to go to secondary schools. But most of them drop out after
primary level due to financial status.
The organization has another big task of reducing the level of street children in the
country, street children are a very big threat to the nation because most of them in future turn into: thieves, buglers and
drug abusers. Life on the street has a lot of notorious activities and therefore we need to fight youth of the streets not
to suffer the side effects of street children.
The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom, there is a very big task to teach the community
about Jesus because that is the only way the prostitutes, street children, HIV/ AIDS victims and the displaced can transform
their lives. With God, everything is possible.
- Try to fight unemployment among
the youth by creating projects that can absorb them and giving them practical skills so that they can create jobs for them
selves
- Fight illiteracy among the underserved
and disadvantaged groups by providing access to education
- To help the disadvantaged attain
some education.
- Fight poverty among the youth
by trying to find an international market for our art products
- Help discover the talents of the
disadvantaged so that they can also benefit from their talents.
